atlantic microwave

Chelton Communication Systems (Chelton) has been a world leader in the development of airborne communication and navigation systems for many years. Recently Chelton decided to expand into ground and airborne radar antennas and related microwave products. To this end, Atlantic Microwave Corporation in Bolton, MA was acquired by Chelton in November, 1994. To accommodate Chelton´s desire to expand into the integrated microwave solutions and antennas market, BSD designed an addition (manufacturing and lab space along with a test range) at their Bolton, MA facility for the purpose of developing and testing Atlantic Microwave´s products.
The facility was organized with a machine shop and model shop on the first level with labs and offices on the second level. The second level also contained space for a large anechoic chamber for the testing of antennas. On the roof of the addition, a test platform was designed as a component of a test range. The other component was located on the ground to the northeast of the building.
The addition is connected to the existing facility on site by a 30-foot two-story link, which contains an elevator to provide accessibility to all areas of the facility.
Because of the size of the facility, an automatic sprinkler system was required by Code. The Town of Bolton had no source of fire protection water. Working with the local authorities, an underground cistern with a diesel-powered pump and automatic controls was designed to satisfy the fire protection requirements.
